This is hardly a recent development. When I went to college back in the early 70s, all the Catholic school graduates that I knew had been taught both. Most however, did not believe in evolution.

It is interesting to note that evolutionary theory began in the Catholic church. Where Darwin raised the ire of the church was in proposing natural selection. The dogma of the catholic church at the time was evolution through intelligent design.

Oh yes! Another misconception is that Columbus proved that the Earth was round, contrary to the teachings of the Church. In fact, the church, at that time, claimed that the the Earth was round. Where the church and Columbus parted ways was that the church claimed that the Earth was 25000 miles in around, and there fore it was impractical to sail west to India, while Columbus claimed it was only 16000 miles around.
