I'm not a software guy, nor do I have access to that kind of proprietary information... but given that Intel is generally quite generous in providing compilers, and that all future x86 processors will support SSE2 (from both Intel AND AMD), if they're not using it, they're idiots.

Not even close, and P4 requires dual channel.

If you're buying 256Meg of RAM, you're buying two sticks unless you're in the top 0.5% of users. DDR is still bloody expensive, and to date has offered minimal performance improvement. I still strongly disagree with your point, and you've yet to even speak to the parallels between the current P4 and the Pentium.

Visual C++ 6.0 Processor Pack
The Visual C++ 6.0 Processor Pack provides intrinsic support for enhanced instruction sets supported by Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) processors. The instructions sets supported are Intel's Pentium III new instruction sets (Streaming SIMD Extensions [SSE]) and Intel's Pentium 4 new instruction sets (Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 [SSE2]) as well as AMD's 3DNow! Instruction sets.

This Processor Pack is recommended only for Visual C++ users who are interested in using the new instruction sets. It is currently available free for customers to download.

The Visual Studio Processor Pack requires that either Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 Enterprise Edition or Visual C++ 6.0 Professional Edition with Service Pack 4 or Service Pack 5 installed. Users must also be running Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000.

Each individual download is compatible only with the specific referenced Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack. Future releases of the Visual C++ 6.0 Processor Pack will be integrated into and shipped with corresponding versions of the Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack CDs. The Visual C++ 6.0 Processor Pack is not included in the current versions of the Visual Studio 6.0 Service Packs downloadable from the web.
