Brazil: Inmet implements supercomputers

Brazil, Apr 17, 2001 (Gazeta Mercantil/SABI via COMTEX) -- Inmet (Instituto Nacional de Metereologia) improved its weather report system and expanded its observation focus to the whole Latin America through the implementation of two supercomputers of the US company SGI (Silicon Graphics Inc.). The Cray SVI and the Origin 2400 are already operating in CCMAD (Centro de Computacao Meteorologica de Alto Desempenho) in Brasilia (DF). The center is responsible for the transmission of data concerning Latin America to the weather report center in Washington. Inmet has 400 stations throughout Brazil and is to install other 50 in 2001. Over the last six years, Inmet investd US$20mil in equipment besides the US$4mil contract with Silicon.
