Hi Tom, it's very frustrating trying to reach these eco-terrorists with reason. But I'll press on just in case there is one open minded Democrat left.

The Outer Continental Shelf is our best hope for major new domestic energy development. It has the potential to supply large quantities of oil and natural gas for decades. This is the submerged land under Federal control, greater than 3 miles from our coastlines.

We've heard the stories of how offshore drilling is environmentally dangerous, but in actuality, just the opposite is true.

America's offshore drilling industry is probably the cleanest major energy extraction business in the world. But here's the real kicker. What is produced by offshore drilling? Nearly 75 percent of offshore production is natural gas. So if you oppose offshore drilling, you're opposing one of the cleanest sources of energy available to America.

Guess who opposes offshore drilling? You guessed it, Greenpeace, the Sierra club, and other wacko leftist organizations which live and die by sound-bite rhetoric, instead of thoughtful ecological examination.

But there's more...

Most spills are caused by oil produced onshore and then spilled from a tanker. Practically all imported oil must be brought here by tanker, on the other hand, 95% of offshore oil and gas is brought ashore by pipeline.

Tankers are where the environmental risks lie. We've all seen what happens when a tanker runs aground and releases its cargo. So, if you want to risk more Exxon Valdez type spills, then oppose offshore oil production, and oppose Alaska pipeline production. Because, in both these cases, oil has a lesser chance of negatively impacting our environment. Tankers are responsible for nearly half of the oil discharged into the world's oceans, while drilling operations are the source of just 1%.
