In my experience there are two obstacles to overcome when first getting a bent.

1) RELAX. Most new bent riders are nervous. They tend to tense up and therefore have trouble controlling the steering as they are quite jerky. Kicking back into seat and relaxing the arms fixes that problem in no time.

2) New muscle growth. It takes a different set of muscles to peddle bent style. Sort of like the difference in the muscle group used to climb up stairs as opposed to climb down. It takes a little time but once they are built up the bent is just as fast on the flats as an upright. Faster on downhills due to aerodynamics and generally slower climbers (can't stand on the peddles).

The only wreck i have had on a bent occurred crossing railroad tracks. I did not hit them at a 90 degree angle and front tire stuck in a groove. Went down fast and about as hard as I could imagine. Did not hurt one bit. With a bent you are very near the ground already. Sort of like falling out of a chase lounge vrs falling off a bar stool.

I've yet to forget to put feet down. Surprisingly so! Many festivities along the RAGBRAI route include beer. And lots of it. I could go into detail but I have a reputation to protect ;)
