The hostages were not released one day after the election. They were released as Reagan was sworn in. The motive was obvious: the Iranians were taunting Carter......

That is one possible explanation. Carter's chief Iran expert believes a deal was made between Reagan and the Iranians.

Of course. The Iranians - like the Russians and other enemies of the US - had contempt for Carter, while they feared and respected Reagan.
