Kevin: I think you will find that intervention of any kind is only effective if you are pushing the ball in the direction in which it is already rolling -- timing and a good sense of direction is key to ALL non-market interventions. Intervention also requires an element of surprise. But you can't have timing, a good sense of direction and an element of surprise these days without paying attention to the stock market -- not if you are AG.

I intended to say that this told me that Greenspan *doesn't* take what's happening in the market into account when he sets rate policy.
