Not many Republicans believed that the solution was a tax hike. Spending reductions alone could have produced the same result with higher growth likely due to greater re-investment in the job producing economy (as opposed to wasting it on giving a "better deal" to the middle and lower classes- who have demonstrated their inability to manage their own finances, by driving consumer debt to the highest historical levels).
