Maybe so. I used to live across the street from the guy in charge of security at the BLS. His job was to make sure that no data got leaked early - he had some interesting anecdotes, about people who sent signals with venetian blinds and such. People who do stuff like that and get caught are in big trouble, but the incentive is big, too.

I have a hard time believing that many people on the outside could be "in the know" - more likely someone more sophisticated and richer than you or I has built an econometric model similar to what the Fed uses. Most of the data the Fed inputs can be bought if you have that kind of money.

Yesterday Vi was pointing out how much money had been injected via coupon pass lately, and I pointed out that the Fed funds rate was creeping over the target - so it was obvious that something was going on, and a rate cut is a logical next step.
