MUSE ($51 +5.. ran) second-quarter beats estimates
SAN FRANCISCO, April 18 (Reuters) - Micromuse Inc. (NasdaqNM:MUSE - news), provider of software that monitors the performance of communications networks, on Wednesday reported fiscal second-quarter earnings that topped expectations as the demand to improve network efficiency climbed.

For the quarter ended March 31, the company reported pro forma earnings per share of $9.2 million, or 12 cents a share, compared with $3.1 million, or $4 cents, in the year-ago period. Pro forma earnings exclude amortization of goodwill and purchased tangible assets.

Analysts on the average expected the company to earn 10 cents a share without charges, according to Thomson Financial/First Call, with estimates ranging from 9 cents a share to 11 cents a share.

Including one-time items the company reported net income of $7 million, or 9 cents per share, compared with $1.5 million or 2 cents a share.

Micromuse, which markets a suite of software products under the Netcool brand, said revenues rose 119 percent above the $27.1 million to $59.3 million.
