SNDK (lose 3 & $23) reports Q1 loss, sees Q2 loss

SUNNYVALE, Calif. April 18 (Reuters) - Computer storage maker Sandisk Corp. (NasdaqNM:SNDK - news) reported a first quarter operating loss of 1 cent a share, before charges, and warned of a second quarter net loss citing weak demand and pricing pressure.

Sandisk said the net loss of 1 cent compared with a profit of 21 cents in the same quarter of last year. Total revenues fell 7 percent to $101 million from $109 million last year.

For the quarter, the company reported an operating loss of $29.1 million, or 43 cents a share, with inventory charges, and further said it realized a loss of $114 million on an investment in United Microelectronics Corp. Combined, the charges led the company to post a net loss of $143.1 million, or $2.11 per share in the first quarter.

Further, Sandisk expects to post a second quarter net loss of 5 cents a share based on product revenues of about $88 million -- equal to the first quarter's product revenues -- and license revenues of about $10 million.

The company said pricing pressures and weak demand will lead to the loss. Sandisk makes flash data storage products, digital imaging and audio storage
