Actually, "rooves" is acceptable, even preferable to purists who rely on legitimate etymologies. Roof is derived from the old Saxon root "krapo-"meaning "roof." Roofs is a verb. It is common in E. to pluralize nouns ending in f by subs. -ves, hoof hooves (alt.) (kapho), wolf wolves (wlkwo), beef beeves, (gwou).....
