I don't keep a journal but at times like this I do go back and reconstruct the situation that existed when I entered a position and remind myself of what my expectations were at the time. In every software engineering process improvement course and seminar I've taken, the simple act of writing down your expectations and then reviewing them during your "post-mortem" has proven to be a very useful activity. Many of the process improvement techniques widely used in industry are no doubt just as valuable here. Very nice post Dale. You made some excellent points. --fl
