Yes, exactly. And that's why headgear are bad for boxers, as well: because rather than getting punched bluntly, a blow to the head with the headgear cushioning it causes the brain to bounce about violently inside the skull, causing contusions on both the front and back - effectively, the prelude to (or in the event of a big puncher, an actual) concussion.

Bareknuckles or 2-4 oz gloves, w/mouthpieces, plus the addition of

a) a new super-heavyweight division (250+); and
b) a National (or Federal) Boxing Commission

...should get this sport of all sports, the ultimate human contest, where it is going.
