After shutting down everything with Enditall, put the cd in and click on browse cd. Click on setup and away you go.

In any case, I now know that when I reinstall, I have to shut off my cable connection to the net first, and I didn't know that.

I have DSL and do not shut it off during reinstallation.I guess if you want to shut the cable modem off that's ok too.

Many cautions about backing everything up. (I have some things backed up but not everything important, my bookmarks for example, which i haven't figured out yet how to do; that was my next project after this problem is solved.)

Your bookmarks will be saved as you are not reformatting(wiping the hard drive clean).

There is Browse This CD

That's the right place to be.You'll see an icon(little computer) named Setup .Click it and you're off to the races.

I don't know what this "Sampler" is.

MS is trying to sell you software. It lets you know what software is available for use with ME.Disregard for now.

One thing I wonder is whether, since I have, from the WinMe Startup Disk that they say to create before you install, may I use that one?

You do not need to create a new disk as you will not be using it in this process.During the reinstallation you will be asked if you want save your old files, say yes.

. I wouldn't blame everybody on this this thread at all for being annoyed at me at this point. I feel that way myself.

I feel safe in saying that nobody around here is annoyed. It's the exact opposite,we want to help you.
When I got my first computer 4 1/2 years ago the lady that installed my ISP software had to show me how to use the mouse.

I now manage that task rather smartly.:)

If you are not comfortable with reinstalling you perhaps should get a friend or someone to guide you through the process.

It can be somewhat daunting for a first timer.

My system came with a Sampler on CD. This is nothing more than some promotional material designed to instill an uncontrollable urge to purchase the retail version of the software featured.

Mine has some games, a photo program, and some other stuff I can't remember, like personal finance. The sampler comes with what's needed to place an order (how convenient!)

I don't have WinMe, so I can't help you with the install. This is getting to be a popular OS, so many others will be able to help.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. Everyone, and there are no exceptions, begins without the experience needed to master their system. Some grow their knowledge and become very proficient -- even to the point of being able to help others. Others, wiser, just run over their systems with a road roller and take up golf.
