Our picture of the world changes. But I wouldn't argue there is any "refining" going on in terms of purity. We may be refined in terms of the gloss we put on things. But to educate someone about beauty only means to indoctrinate them on it. It isn't any different than teaching someone a language. They know the language because they know the language. It doesn't make that language any "better" than any other language.

That those who wish to be connoisseurs should converge does not surprise me. They need to agree enough to make it clear what is "valuable". It's a culture where one disagrees a bit to stand out and make a statement, not to make sense. It's a cultural milieu I understand rather well. I don't mind it. I just don't think the connoisseurs opinion of beauty has any more validity than that of a 5 year old. Actually I might say the 5 year old's is more refined if we are talking about purity. Less pretense and social awareness and social fear of making a "wrong" decision in the 5 year old's perceptions of beauty.
