LOL, fair point. I read it as meaning the part of the Moon 'currently' not illuminated by sunlight, it's the only way it could make sense.

A 5-year trend may well not be meaningful, especially given 11 and (is it) 70-year solar cycles... but it at least has the virtue of being recent <g - read back>. In addition, as they imply in the article, solar output variations should be self-correcting because it's the Earth's albedo (the *proportion* of light reflected) that is measured.
I'm nevertheless surprised that they felt sufficiently comfortable to publish on that basis...
