Not only that, but during the war people earned a pile of money (think Rosie the Riveter) but couldn't buy anything (rationing). Once it was over there was a big pent-up demand for goodies. The Great Depression really didn't end until WWII kicked in, so there was a lot of buying to do.

But this is what the fancy new houses looked like in the 1950's - I don't know, maybe they look good to people living in Silicon Valley.-g-
