Mark -

...I don't have stats to back this up, I just remember reading somewhere about the use of the median which colored the data.

I think you've got it backwards. The median is usually a more typical value of a set of data points since the mean is distorted by the actual values of the extreme data points.

Regards, Don

mark, another anecdotal point to ponder. one of my big goals was to become a single earner household and raise a family. this used to be expected. it is now a total luxury that one must be thankful they attained unless they had the silver spoon syndrome.

then they ought to be thankful for the silver spoon! ;-)

the median is supposed to remove the outlier data that can skey the mean.

wrt low cost housing, i only have anecdotal evidence. the condo i own went for $38k in kirkland, wa (just outside bellevue, wa). during 1991. can we agree that was cheap?

well, they are pushing $100k 10 years later. i don't think wages are up nearly 200% in the same time frame. this is proof of nothing other than insane asset inflation does exist in at least one place. i'm unaware of any place that has massive deflation that counteracts the ny, bay area, seattle, so-cal, etc markets that are BOOMING. they may exist, i just don't where they are, nor have i heard of them.

<Notice the word median?>

Yea, that's the point.

<Impossible to say with certainty what the mean and median are for a given area in relation to mean and median income without better resources. >

It is a certainty that the data provided makes more sense than the simple averages spewed about.
