Finnish mobile handset giant Nokia [US:NOK] [SE:000053994] reported a 10 percent rise in first quarter pretax profits to €1.48 billion, beating expectations for €1.34 billion. Sales rose 22 percent to €8.01 billion ahead of forecasts for €7.8 billion. Shares initially gained on the news but were trading back at unchanged by mid-morning. See more on Nokia

Ericsson's [SE:000010865] [US:ERICY] results were less impressive. The Swedish mobile phone handset and network manufacturer reported first-quarter profits in line with expectations, but warned that second-quarter profits would not improve and announced 12,000 job cuts.
