Michael:

<Last year I read that Goldman alone was short $32 Bln of the metal.>

Where do we find the current short positions that these firms hold? Has not the double bottom that has been formed been their opportunity to cover? If they haven't covered it all, they'll have to take a loss on the rest if they can't keep the price down.

stockcharts.com[l,a]daclyymy[dd][pb50!b200!c4!c9!c18][vc60][iLb14!La12,26,9!Lh14,3!Ll14!Lc20]

I'm sure they are willing to take a loss on some, but as a true cynic, the timing is crucial as the next move will involve selling their own firms before they take that loss so they get their money out and leave the rest of the bagholders with hands half full. It's too bad cause it is time they were all crushed.

Regards

Bob

Why have the analysts at brokers like Lehman, Solomon, Goldman etc etc. all come out repeatedly downgrading gold and gold mining shares?

Michael:
Goldman downgraded NEM today, JPM downgraded last week. Short interest in NEM is up 12.5% to 9,350,341 shares as reported in today's WSJ. Either the shorts are right or we're in for a good squeeze.

<<Last year I read that Goldman alone was short $32 Bln of the metal.>>

This works out to 100+ million oz short position. I doubt very much this is true...don't think GS is that dumb.
