Nokia said it was on track to take the leadership position in deliveries for third generation mobile phone infrastructure, currently Ericsson is the world's biggest supplier of cellular phone network equipment.

The Finnish company, which sells about one in three of all mobile phones sold worldwide, said its first quarter handset sales volume increased at more than twice the rate of the overall market compared to the first quarter of 2000.

Sales at Nokia Networks, the group's cell phone infrastructure unit, rose 35 percent to €2 billion and sales at Nokia Mobile Phones rose 20 percent to €5.8 billion.

"We were able to extend our leadership while managing the day-to-day challenges of a demanding economic environment," said Jorma Ollila, Nokia's chairman and CEO.

Ollila added that Nokia's "well positioned" to reach its target of 40 percent of global cellular phone sales.
