Petz,

Another possibility is that AMD wants to force the conversion, and is willing to support the price to make the conversion happen. And there was no need so far to buy any shares.

re: "AMD did not repurchase any shares"

AMD has much better uses for any cash that it has: R&D, Plant Capacity, Production Equipment Upgrades, and I am sure that you can think of some others. AMD is almost capacity limited despite the atrocious industry environment in which we find ourselves.

Patient Regards,

DARBES

I think they made a mistake not buying back shares in the teens.

To paraphrase General Patton, let the other guy buy back his shares in the teens!

Hindsight is always 20/20, but AMD does not exist for the purpose of being an investment bank, buying its own shares at $17 and selling them at $34. What if they bought at $17 and the stock went to $9 as some predicted? It could have happened. AMD is in the wafer fab business, and that takes gigabucks. It's an expensive hassle to register shares and sell them to the public, so if you know you can use the cash later, it's more prudent to hang onto it now.

On the other hand, we can probably rely on Craig, Andy, and the rest of the investment banking team over at Intel to take full advantage of such a trading opportunity as AMD passed up.
