they may already be at that stage. no-one except the occasional retired politician says it outright (e.g. Schmidt and Sakakibara, even Rubin now and then), but the reality probably is that everybody's scared to death over the macro economic imbalances. the Fed keeps pursuing the 'paper over it' or 'print us back to Utopia' course. the ECB definitely shows some disdain for this method...it wouldn't have a money supply growth target otherwise.
