The objective of a scientific community is not to build consensus, but to seek truth.

Good point. One of the shortcomings of a consensus process, and I started to mention it in my post to Tim, then changed my mind, is that it seeks only agreement. The group could be agreeing on something absolutely wrong-headed. I've seen that happen, but in some situations it's more important that people agree than that they find the right answer. Yes, finding scientific fact is not one of them. But determining where there is a consensus in the scientific community about what is and is not fact is helpful to the scientific community to inform its needs for further inquiry and to the political process, which seems to inevitably accompany science these days.
