I don't think fighting for something that you believe in or want to defend is always a bad thing.

No, you have to decide whether you're better off standing your ground or doing something else. Part of the art to life. The problem, it seems to me, is when the only tool we think we have is a hammer.

The key is to get it by persuading the other party that you deserve it, or it is in their best interests to give it to you. Of course, that assumes it is right for you to have it in the first place. Unfortunately much of the fighting I see in my practice is over things that people know they don't really deserve but are fighting about because they want something else, or because they would feel weak giving it up without a fight, or for other reasons.
