Ish,

Oil bearing shale now off limits. Without energy this country dies.

I worked is an oil shale mine under Carter's MEOW program. Oil shale development would be the worst environmental disaster in the history of the world. Besides which, large scale oil shale development is technologically impossible.

Illinois has enough coal to provide electricity to the US for 250 years. It's high sulphur though. Bush has pledged $1 billion to make ways to burn it cleanly.

Good luck. ;^)

Illinois has been giving state parks and refuges to the coal companies. The reclaimation makes the land much better for recreation and wildlife.

All of the National Monuments Clinton designated were in spectacular western scenic locations. Unlike flatland in Illinois, it is impossible to restore the amazing cliffs of the Kaiparowits plateau once they are destroyed.

I have seen the strip mining restoration on Black Mesa, Az. and it is a disaster.

Once Bush opens the doors to destroying the National Monuments, it is a slippery slope to ruination of the National Park System.
