An alternate and simple way to save IE favorites is to simply copy the folder in which they are located - c:\windows\favorites, by means of Windows Explorer or My Computer to another location where you want to save it. This also works for the desktop, which appears like a folder in Windows Explorer.

I find that using Windows Explorer is a handy way to directly manage your favorites and desktop.
