This article tends to support your argument, that lower and middle income Americans are reducing their home equity in greater proportion than upper middle and upper class Americans. Also bankruptcies are hitting low and low-mid incomes harder:

but a banruptcy is a bankruptcy who ever it hits: I see no reason in your statement to think that the lower levels of equity is theerby less important (I guess you dont either?)
