Carolyn, I think population of the nation, at that time, was decent, moral, and basically honest, but it was the war that brought the individuals together to defeat the threat of world domination by the Axis. All wars, of all kinds, and of all time, are horrible. One wonders if they will ever cease. It appears not. "Man's inhumanity towards man." I might add that the quotation also refers to slavery.
