Secretary of the Interior, Gale Norton is dedicated to the support of Private Property Rights. She's a former alumnus of the Mountain States Legal Foundation (MSLF). The MSLF helped Miller Oil win their inverse condemnation lawsuit against the State of Michigan.

Issue: Spring 2001
MSLF ALUMNI CONTINUE TO IMPRESS
Foundation Proud of Their Achievements
The recent confirmation and swearing in of former MSLF attorney Gale Norton as Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior hardly surprises long time observes of the Foundation, founded in 1977. In fact, an impressive list of individuals who have worked for or donated their time and effort to the work of the nonprofit, public interest law firm have gone on to distinguish themselves further. Of course, preceding Norton as Secretary of the Interior was MSLF's first president, James G. Watt, who served as Secretary from 1981-1983. But the list does not stop there.

Current United States Senator from Arizona, Jon L. Kyl (R), served as a member of MSLF's Board of Litigation, as did Wyoming Supreme Court Justice, Marilyn Kite. Former MSLF president, Roger Marzulla, served as Assistant Attorney General for the Lands and Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, one of the agency's top positions.

Former MSLF attorneys Chip Mellor and Clint Bolick started Institute for Justice (IJ), which they now serve as president and litigation director respectively. IJ has earned national publicity for many of its crosscutting, neo-conservative legal cases. Former MSLF's paralegal, Nancie Marzulla, left MSLF, graduated from law school, and then started Defenders of Property Rights, which is often quoted regarding property rights issues. Both IJ and Defenders are located in Washington, D.C.

Former MSLF attorney Tom Blickensderfer was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives then to the Colorado State Senate and now serves the administration of Governor Bill Owens as Endangered Species Program Director for the Department of Natural Resources. Former Board of Litigation member Don Maddox was recently named as Lea County (New Mexico) Judge.

The remarkable success of these individuals demonstrates that the litigation undertaken by MSLF is well within the mainstream of the American public and, in fact, is consistent with the views of the overwhelming majority of the American people. But most of all these successes reveal the talented and highly capable individuals with whom MSLF has been fortunate to be associated over the last quarter of a century.

Good article. Minorities were SYSTEMATICALLY denied the right to vote, IMO, and they will not - and should not - forget it. Bush (s) will lose in a landslide, but unfortunately we'll have to send in some UN observers, like we do to other dictatorially run areas of the world, to check the validity of the voting process. Now let's just see how big an effort Jeb makes to replace chads with electronics. Would you admit, Ed, that if only a minimal effort is made, the FIX is in -- again?

Another thought - I wish, in retrospect, and to assuage the environmental fears, our beloved company had named itself something like NOT NEAR THE COASTAL PETROLEUM.
