If you can afford it, a much better alternative is a selective Cox-2 inhibitor like Celebrex or Vioxx. Among the many physiological effects of aspirin, probably the most helpful is the inhibition of Cox-2, which causes inflammation and pain. However, it, like other NSAIDS, inhibits Cox-1, which protects the stomach lining. A selective Cox-2 inhibitor inhibits inflammation and pain without irritating the stomach lining, or prolonging the clotting time. Unfortunately, you need a doctor's prescription and they cost a fortune. Luckily for me, I belong to an HMO and just have a $7 copay. I recommend Celebrex very highly, and no, I don't have any stake in any drug company.:)
