Here's a dose of reality from Richard Russell's Dow Theory Letter:

"What could cause this bear market to continue its downside progress? One problem is discussed on page B2 of Today's WSJ. This is the debt problems of the telecoms. Writes the Journal, "In an interview (Nortel's chief) points to a chart showing the rapid increase in debt held by the world's telecom carriers. Some $255 billion of debt was added in 1998, and an additional $326 billion in 1999. Last year, amid a frenzy of new network building, the industry racked up a staggering $655 billion of debt, Nortel's research shows."

Now they've got to pay the piper, and the piper is a mountain of debt. At a low 5%, you're talking about over $30 billion in payments. Where's the money going to come from?"
