Hi Bambs and John, you two are beating on CSCO again. Naughty. Anyhow, CSCO final assemblies painted boxes that directs traffic on the net. The boxes are really quite simple stuff, at least for an electrical engineer whose concentration was computer structures. But you two know the simplicity of the boxes already.

The trend with each and every electronic goodie is that when first innovated, they are bulky, wire frenzy, and at times require in-house and proprietary software. With the maturing of the products and the natural demand of the customer base, competitive pressure forces standardization of hard ware, software and interfaces. Standardization removes proprietary margin, and lowers E in P/E, eventually impacting P, as standardization allows manufacturing savvy players to take the lollipop away from the general contractor. Standardization also creates openings for new entrants who are good at making other, but similar boxes.

I think TACS/AMPS to GSM/CDMA migration in cellular systems is but one example of the trend, and routers/hubs soon to be another.

But, you two know this already.

Chugs, Jay
