Ish,

Vegetation reduces the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, period. More CO2 is converted to solid forms, than released by decaying.

The solid forms include limestone and coal. Carbon is not created or destroyed. CO2 combines with Ca in sea water, and forms CaCO3, otherwise known as limestone.
