Special FightNews.com coverage: Rahman KOs Lewis!

"The Rock" becomes the new heavyweight champion
as lucrative Lewis-Tyson clash goes up in smoke...

by Flattop

Hasim Rahman exploded a right hand bomb to the jaw of Lennox Lewis in round five that sent the now former world heavyweight champ down and out at Carnival City, South Africa. After a calm first round, Lewis began landing combinations in round two. By round three Rahman's left eye was starting to swell, however "The Rock" continued to fight back gamely. The tide turned in round five when Rahman landed a hard right that shook Lewis.

Moments later, Rahman landing his crunching blow to win the WBC/IBF/IBO heavyweight crowns. When the new champ saw a later replay of the devastating final punch he said, "Oooh...That should be rated R!"

Rahman said, "No Lennox and Tyson...I want to fight Tyson right here [in South Africa]." Lewis, who weighed in at the heaviest of his career and arrived in high altitude Johannesberg just 12 days prior to the bout would not admit he took the fight lightly. "That's what happens in heavyweight boxing," Lewis said. "There's always next time." Next time could come fairly quickly as there is a rematch clause written into the contract.
