I guess optical communications just ain't as interesting as it used to be... For a while, anyway.

Thanks for the CC info, Will

Anything on GaN on GaN?

From Kopin's 10-K for the year 2001

Page 2:

We commercially develop and manufacture Gallium Arsenide-based HBT transistor wafers and other commercial semiconductor products that use Indium Phosphide, Gallium Nitride, and Gallium Arsenide-based substrates.

Page 8:

In 2000, we acquired a privately held Maryland based corporation, Super Epitaxial Products, Inc. (SEP). SEP, which was subsequently renamed Kopin Optical, Inc., has expertise in gallium nitride which we plan to integrate into our production processes.

I wonder if they're working with any of the companies that are plugging away on free-standing GaN substates? Perhaps they could eventually develop a market for GaN epi on GaN device wafers, in analogy to the market for GaAs epi on GaAs device wafers (epi also including other flavors, e.g. Al, In, P). Otoh, perhaps the device wafer business model will be less applicable to production of optoelectronic devices than it is to semiconductor devices?

On last year's Q1 conference call, Fan said they were hoping to introduce products from Kopin Optical before year end 2001, but we're still waiting. The issue did not come up on the latest conference call. Well, it's about time those guys produced something. So far they've performed at about the same level as the Baltimore Orioles. <g>

Just a little idle speculation.
