It is a ridiculous thing, this "War on Drugs." I've no problems with high levels of enforcement to protect children form tobacco, alcohol and other types of drugs, but to kill or imprison adults for drug use is just stupid. It didn't work with prohibition and it won't work with any other drugs. Education and treatment programs are the answer (imo) and the question is, "How do you help this society get out of killing and maiming it's own citizens for drug use and how do we REALLY help the people affected by drugs?"

I've never been addicted to anything. I don't even drink, because I don't like the taste of alcohol. I can't even tolerate caffeine very well, so I don't drink tea and coffee. But I have nothing but compassion for people who are addicted to things. I don't need to be an addict to se very clearly that punishment is not the way to cure addiction. I see very clearly that people who are sick are not made well by prison. Prison only makes the prisoner, and society, sicker.

, it might be a mistake to assume somebody using the id "thames_sider" is American
It surely would - just see my profile <g> although to be fair I'd have to stand on the roof to see the river, and even then I'd need to squint.

As for the paraquat, I knew what it was... but I think its use in an IT webzine motto is pleasantly surreal - tickles my sense of whimsy. Still, I think I'll avoid American-grown marijuana for the time being...

Lastly, I can't think of many more nonsensical things for governments to waste their money on than 'warring' against drugs. At least conventional wars offer a chance of victory, and don't simply make the other side richer. There's less chance of fifth columnists, too <g>
Legalise, regulate and tax - it'll happen eventually, I'm sure.

The shooting down of the missionaries' plane was an accident waiting to happen. Our presence down there is reminiscent of the early days of Vietnam. Clinton's Plan Colombia has been a failure. I hope the Powell doctrine goes into effect soon.
