Why would that be something to consider? It is the mainstream view and does not get any consideration by the mainstream except that it is accepted wisdom (to all but those on this board).

Oh, he might be right. If I were absolutely convinced he were wrong, I'd be loading the boat with gold, natural gas futures and shorting the long term T-bond from here until doomsday. As it is, I'm holding mostly cash, so in effect, I'm betting that he probably is right. Productivity will fall as a function of slowing growth, bank on it. The monetary aggregate growth is not an idle issue, it will come back to bite us on the a$$ sooner or later. The issue of degradation of services is a real one, especially since we are in a "service-oriented" economy...and it does not get hedonically-adjusted, unlike manufactured goods. I'd urge you not to draw conclusions too quickly based on what you see in the Metro D.C. area. For numerous reasons, it is insulated from what happens everywhere else around the country (ie, I don't see many layoffs being proposed in federal jobs, do you?)

I went to Tar-Jay today and the parking lot was pretty full

but i did get cadbury caramel easter eggs (pack of four) at the un heard of price of 15 cents each...bought a case!

easter candy bombed this year i guess....

gasoline reg unleaded at 1.62 in one of the largest refining cities in the world! it's only april.

real estate taxes being hiked again here another 10% across the board... same as last year and the year before etc etc....

meat and produce prices in the last 15 months have gone up at least 30% on average...and we get some of the cheapest prices around compared to other parts of the country....

i killed the mower this weekend... bought the same cheapo mower i bought two years ago for 99$.. this year 135.00... exact same mower but now with some cheaper parts... more plastic in the wheels, back flap protector like a piece of suran wrap etc etc etc etc.... poorer quality.....much higher price....

staying in a hotel in frankfurt..at the airport in june... the price is ALWAYS for the last four years 450 DM..... this year, so far..... 360DM......

had upgrade miles for first class seats for our trip.. we needed three...

got the seats outbound... none available on the return... booked at the end of march... suddenly last week...3 seats become available! that means three businessmen are not going to spend together over 18,000 dollars on that trip....maybe because its Lufthansa (the you will have a good time airline or else)

visiting aunt (76 year old) three weeks ago faints at the breakfast table.. unresponsive... call emergency services.... very low blood pressure... off to the hospital she goes (first time in her life and here from germany)....
battery of tests... finally released the after noon of the next day....diagnosis...
nothing serious...

bill: over 8k!! She's safely back in germany.

needless to say.... i've been distracted lately by the costs of living....

We went to Home Depot and the lines were so long we just left. Costco was just jammed. People buying stuff.

FWIW, Same at my HD here in Minneapolis. I tell you, though, I was also at Mall of America today and peple were NOT buying. I typically have to wait in line at any store I go to, but did not wait once today at seven differnet stores at which I purchased goods . Plenty of people there, but seemed to be very little buying going on.

<I realize this is heresy, but maybe one thing to consider is that Greenspan may be right.>

But you just proved he isn't [correct in cutting]:
