One of the fathers of LA. Mass Transit is a man named Wendell Cox. Spend 5 minutes in his web site and you will find he has seen the error of his ways:

Probably because we have less rock to build on which is far safer in an earthquake re sway and we in LA much more ground that tends to shift.
It is difficulty to project the sway a building can endure when the waves are unknown until they actually occur. You can create a model but you can't guarantee how the earth will move in relation to the building and building in relation to the one placed beside it.
I had major damage my neighbor across the street had little during the earthquake why?
We both have the approximate same footage i am well bolted so is she you tell me. I lost every piece of china and crystal i owned. I have an oak henredon wall that weighs a ton the unit survived but in doing so almost pulled off the living room wall.
I don't have the answers my neighbor returned from a short vacation in Laguna her response to me was there was an earthquake in Northridge and i can't see any damage to my house in the Westside. Really please come in and view mine. Her words no damage and my house where wooden floors were grooved without the pegs due to falling objects that moved from secured wall units with glass enclosed doors. I could hardly open the doors in my units they were beveled heavy glass with european hard ware, the earth quake did. The earth quake moved the unit with the wall attached to it. She had an open book cases not anchored and it remained upright nothing was on her floor when she arrive home except a couple of books. My kitchen was all glass and china again i think i thought i was secured but I deplore nobs and was tight as could be but i was magnetically sprung and not tightly enough. She had an older kitchen with a typical latch nob that latched into no where as of a zillion years ago yep nothing broke.

I had numerous neighbors in here taking turns using my POTS line it was working off and on in three days of a close to total black out. That worked while many did not work

I can't give you the answers i only know the mess i was in and the one my neighbor was not in.

An older house in the final finishing process of total rebuilt all code and beyond proved to be a total loss. You can't be sure of seismic waves nor why the ground beneath acts as it does, that I can guarantee promise you and will write a sworn statement to attest to. I am one of those individuals who loves bare feet and walked on glass and came out unharmed and i don t know why that happened either I did not know i was walking on glass until i tried to re enter my house and wondered how i ever walked out of it in bare feet as i did not know how to get back into it without cutting my feet.

L.A. is not land constricted.

All of the other responses that you got in regards to the L.A. skyscraper question have merit, but....

csun.edu

The house that I was renting at the time got red tagged (forced to move out). I lived in an area that is part of the flood plain just south of Northridge. Building on sediments is a bad thing.
