Applied Materials Achieves Milestone Shipment of 1,000th CMP System
Multiple System Order From Silterra Affirms Market and Technology Leadership of the Mirra Platform
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Apr 23, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Applied Materials, Inc. today announced the 1,000th shipment milestone of its Mirra(R) CMP (chemical mechanical planarization) system to semiconductor wafer foundry Silterra (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. This milestone achievement affirms the acceptance and market leadership of the Mirra platform, which has established Applied Materials as the No. 1 supplier in total CMP system shipments for a third consecutive year.

"As Silterra continues to qualify its manufacturing facilities for volume production, Applied Materials' CMP equipment has proven to be the most robust and flexible solution available for our diverse requirements," said KC Ang, executive vice president at Silterra. "We are impressed with the technological capabilities of the Mirra Mesa(TM) system and in particular the Titan Profiler(TM) head's excellent center-to-edge polish control, which we expect will allow us to deliver high-quality, repeatable results."

Launched in 1995, the Mirra system is used for all CMP applications throughout the world's leading fabs. Distinguishing features include a unique multi-platen architecture and Titan Profiler polishing head that deliver superior performance results, as well as advanced in-line metrology and closed-loop control options for high productivity. The Mirra line of CMP systems was expanded in 1999 with the introduction of the Mirra Mesa system with integrated cleaning technology. Most recently, based on the Mirra Mesa system's production-proven architecture and process approach, Applied Materials introduced the Reflexion(TM) CMP system for 300mm processing.

"Applied Materials' leadership in the CMP market, marked by this milestone achievement, is a result of our focusing on what customers need -- high productivity, excellent process performance and process flexibility," said Chris Smith, vice president and general manager of Applied Materials' CMP Product Business Group. "The Mirra platform's advanced process technologies and on-going innovations that include enabling copper processes and endpoint detection, continue to provide new capabilities for customers. We are grateful to our customers, whose support has been critical in the Mirra platform's rapid acceptance into the industry's most advanced fabs."

Applied Materials (Nasdaq: AMAT chart, msgs), the largest supplier of products and services to the global semiconductor industry, is one of the world's leading information infrastructure providers. Applied Materials' Web site is appliedmaterials.com.

**Charts*** Thanks for the good charts *** the weekly summary of the charts is exactly some of the bears on this thread have been predicting.Perhaps if you posted the weekly chart summary during the week-end it would help us plan for the week. Charts don't move the market, but neither are they to be ignored. Ignoring the history of things is a sure route to failure.
