Gina, I believe your comments about private fuel cells shows you have remarkable insight. In old cities like Boston it is not practical to upgrade the powere lines in some areas. Fuel cells have been used by users whose power demands have grown beyond the limits of the local power distribution system. Boston Police department comes to mind.

Fuel cells are going to take the market by storm once they reach mass production status and costs come down. I figure this is about 5 years away. I would love to have a portable 1 KWatt propane unit for camping. It can be a power source, indoor heater, and stove all at the same time.

Was just reading an article yesterday about fuel cells being ready to replace the alternator in automotive applications. This has interesting ramifications. No more dead batteries - you can charge while the engine is off. Batteries can be smaller because the fuel cell can supplement the starting process. No energy robbing mechanical draws on the engine - increased power. Emergency heat when the engine isn't running or can't run. You could potentially run the air conditioning compressor off of the unit, giving you A/C when the engine is off. The possibilities boggle the mind.

This is why I watch the GTL stocks, the biggies are investing a lot in GTL now, which should eventually lead to cleaner fuels.

What's GTL?
