If violence in the city stays low, Israel will consider relaxing the closure there and allowing Palestinian traffic in and out of the city, the sources said. However, the defense authorities do not intend to allow Israelis into Jericho. Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat recently asked Foreign Minister Shimon Peres to allow Israelis back to gamble at the casino, Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer said yesterday in response to a question from MK Ophir Pines-Paz. Erekat, Ben-Eliezer said, promised that in return the PA would enforce peace in the Jordan Valley. The Government Coordinator in the Territories recently compiled a plan to get life in the Jordan Valley back to normal. It included concessions in tourism, agriculture and finance, provided the calm in the Valley continued. It would also facilitate relatively free passenger traffic to Allenby Bridge. The plan did not include the Jericho casino. In the last two months, the sources said, the Palestinians have been refurbishing the casino, which was badly damaged by IDF gunfire at the start of the Al Aqsa Intifada. © copyright 2001 Ha'aretz. At least, I guess Sharansky and his followers don't care much about playing Russian roulette! LOL!
