Things are beginning to heat up in the UK countryside...

BREAKING NEWS: Health officials are stressing that the human form of foot-and-mouth is "mild" and usually clears up within weeks of contracting it.

Call for use of napalm in foot-and-mouth battle

The Government may consider using napalm to dispose of
animals slaughtered over the foot-and-mouth outbreak.

Labour MP Tam Dalyell had suggested to the Commons
that it may be more effective than pyres.

Environment Minister Michael Meacher said he would be
prepared to look into its use.

Mr Dalyell, Labour MP for Linlithgow had asked whether the
Government had been in touch with the Nevada Department
of Agriculture at Reno or the Louisiana State Veterinary
Service at Baton Rouge who have experience of the use of
napalm.

Speaking during exchanges on the Rural Taskforce and the
foot-and-mouth outbreak, he said: "Napalm will dispose of
carcasses in 60 minutes, where pyres take three days.
Because of the lack of vaporising effect of napalm, you
don't get the by-products, the dioxins, that may arise from
the burning of sleepers or old tyres.

"Isn't this a matter that should be considered rather urgently
and is the reason why it has not been considered that there
are overtones of Vietnam which might not be acceptable to
the public."

Mr Meacher: "I take the point you are making.

"I have no inhibitions in regard to Vietnam about the whole
question of napalm. I am certainly prepared to look at it, and
if in the, I hope, rapidly reducing number of fires in open
fields, if that can make a contribution I am certainly happy to
take it on board."
