Be sure you're using ALT and the numeric keypad... and hold ALT while keying each digit... when you release ALT, the character should be generated.

Scumbria, For Special Characters, Try using: Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Character Map.

Double click the field to get the character into the 'Characters to copy' field, then cut & paste into the message.
