Actually, I was reading The New Republic, The New York Review of Books (especially Timothy Garton Ash), and Foreign Affairs, among other journals that might have been characterized as conservative. I also am a perennial subscriber to The Washington Post, which had a lot of reporting on what was happening in the East, and an occasional subscriber to The New York Times. Also, as I already said, towards the end of all of this the Soviet Union was losing conscripts at a high rate, as they preferred to go desert.
