I thought the contrast would be evident, but I may have been mistaken.

Depends on the audience for whom you are writing. If you're writing to express yourself or for people predisposed to understand you, it might be evident. If you're writing for an alien audience, that's something else. Like I said way back when, I don't know the purpose of your essay. If it's intended for people like me, the "ergo" needs beefing up.
