In general, though, I would say that evangelism of any sort is evidence of religious
intolerance. You can't be an evangelist unless you believe that what you believe is better
than what someone else believes, and that others ought to abandon their beliefs and
adopt yours.

But this is the whole concept, inter alia, of parenting, of government, and of teaching. Parenting and government tend to enforce their "what we believe is better than what you believe" with force or physical and fiscal control rather than persuasion, as missionaries do. Teachers fall somewhat in the middle; they aren't allowed to imprison or beat disagreeing students, and can't fine them or withhold allowances, but they can flunk them and damage their future prospects.

Heck, three quarters of what's posted on this thread (and nine tenths of what you post <g>) is posted from the posture of what I believe is better than what you believe. Every stock pick any of us makes is made with the conviction that what we belive about this stock we are buying or selling is better (in a financial sense, which is what counts in investing) than what the person who is on the other end of the transaction believes.

I have no problem with religious people who DO aid work. I do have a problem with people who want to work to pry people away from their own beliefs. There is a difference, imo. Missionaries are not the same as, for example, Peace Corp workers who may be religious. I respect people who are religious and wish to live a good life by way of an example, but not living only to pry away from people their native beliefs. That seems a scummy sort of occupation to me.

I believe you misuse the word intolerance. Tolerance for other ideas does not mean you have to agree with them or accept them as equally valid with your ideas. It means you don't hate people for being different or holding different ideas, and you don't try to force people to conform to your ideas or hurt or kill them because they are different and/or have different ideas. You let people express there ideas and don't make them hide their differences.
