Yes i am aware that games stress the computers or at least the graphics.

My understandaing was that most gamers buy the cheapest CPU and highest performance graphics card they can afford.

My understanding was that at higher resolutions that most folks play the CPU makes no difference.

This is an excellent point and is one of the things that I can see causing continued perpetual upgrade cycles in pc's going forward. I think we are already looking at over 40+'s playing in large numbers. And the gender statistics that you mention are increasing as well. Both of these facts I know from first hand experience from playing a MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) called Everquest. Every day I run into someone in this game that is either female, middle aged, or says something in the course of a conversation such as, "oh my dad gave me this shield, he is a level 53 druid".

Games aren't just for geeks anymore they are being mainstreamed big time and games are being written that appeal to wider audiences than just the frag, bash, kill, maim first person shooters like quake etc. It is this mainstreaming that just may be the next big killer app (ie. changing of the nature of entertainment. Games aren't only for young adolescents anymore they are becoming more multiplayer, online, interactive, 3D, and immersive and are being targeted to larger audiences. In fact the business model of Sony/Verant (and other companies like them) is dependent on targeting and achieving large numbers of players who pay a subscription fee each month. (BTW, 3D rendering realism has a LOT of room to improve) =)

Everquest is just the first of many, the next game being developed by it's producer is "Star Wars Galaxies"... tell me that won't have a wide market =) I have seen Sony estimate that they have over 350,000 active members for this game and that is just for Everquest.

That's pretty impressive retention for a game that was released two years ago. And in that two years it has already seen two expansion packs that have increased textures and increased polygon count. (on the expansion continents) There is a third expansion that is planned that will have a whole new 3d rendering engine. All these people will be feeling pressure to upgrade. The new continents drop my frame rates horrendously.
