I think Dell is perceived as being the "Gold Standard"....overall #1 in a combination of value/service/quality....that doesn't necessarily mean they are always #1 in price but they are close enough in price and tops in all the other categories that folks are willing to pay a few bucks extra to go with the best.

Jimbo.

I built a PC and a notebook at both Dell and Compaq and Compaq is quite a bit cheaper than Dell.....I don't get why Dell is perceived as having the best prices.I am talking identical systems in the 1200 to 2500 price range.

Because Dell said so and the talking heads don't check it out.

Hoops, in the workstation segment CPQ will sell you an entry level AP250 workstation with a quad monitor video card, 256mb RDRAM, 40GB disk, CDRW drive, modem, and no monitors for around $3200. Dell will sell you the same box for $2400. CPQ wants $1500 for a 17" LCD display, Dell gets $949 for one with both analog and digital capability. Multiply that by 4, figure in the price difference of the workstation, and you can see the problem...

John
